The Next Version Of Android Will Be Called Jelly Bean

Google's Android codenames so far are: 1.5 Cupcake, 1.6 Donut, 2.0/2.1 Eclair, 2.2 Froyo, 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.0 Honeycomb, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (version number not confirmed). Ofcourse there's a pattern here but you already knew it. What dessert name starting with the next letter (J) in line could Google use?

According to recent reports, the next Android version to come after Ice Cream Sandwich will be called Jelly Bean, at least that's what a trusted source tells ThisIsMyNext. Another one says that Jelly Bean is on the table but the official codename hasn't been decided yet. What both sources seem to agree upon is that the next version of Android will bring "game-changing stuff" that had originally been scheduled for Ice Cream Sandwich.

Is Google pulling a Windows Phone, because of Windows Phone Mango and iOS 5? Windows Phone was rushed to the market without some key features in order to catch (a late) start. Is Google rushing Ice Cream Sandwich to the market to compete with Windows Phone Mango and Apple's iOS 5? Why do you think "game-changing stuff" that had originally been scheduled for Ice Cream Sandwich has been pushed back to Jelly Bean?

Nokia 800 Windows Phone Brand Leaks & More; Windows Phone View

Watch this week's Windows Phone View as we wrap up all this week's good and bad inside the world of Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. In today's show we go through more details on the HTC Radar and Titan, our coverage on IFA, and Brandon Miniman's recent editorial of why Windows Phone 7 is winning. We also go deep into the new leaks we found about the Nokia 800 branding for one of their Windows Phone offerings. We talk about our experience with YouTube's recent support of their HTML5 mobile version on Windows Phone Mango and other software releases. To end the good section, we talk about Microsoft's recent job posting about a team that'll be in charge of improving the way Windows Phone detects your location through crowd sourcing.

In the bad section, we go through Microsoft's recent "locationgate" lawsuit, and how we believe the whole claim doesn't hold water according to our own inner testing of how Windows Phone 7 shares your location data.

All this and more after the break.

Leaked Sprint Memo Hints At iPhone 5 In First Half Of October

ư
The iPhone 5 has the potential to be huge for Sprint, so it's understandable that the carrier wants the phone's launch to go over as successfully as possible. A new leaked memo shows the network placing the first two weeks of October on a no-vacations-allowed blackout list due to "the possibility of a major phone launch"; we can't think of anything Sprint could be talking about besides the arrival of the iPhone 5.

We had already heard a report that Sprint would first get the phone in October, but this new information, if accurate, has the potential to cut that list of possible release dates in half. Frankly, we'd bet on it getting the phone well on the early side of this new range, so it would have sufficient staff on-hand to manage the influx of customers that would immediately follow the launch; there wouldn't be much point in making this kind of restriction if Sprint was planning on starting-up sales on October 14.

What The Heck Is This Weird-Looking BlackBerry?

A series of images has been floating around today of what's purported to be the BlackBerry 9980, a cousin to the recently-released Bold 9900 and 9930. While there plenty of similarities, some radical design decisions leave us with a smartphone unlike any other BlackBerry we've come across before. Is it a prototype, a counterfeit device, an elaborate case mod, or something else altogether?

Much of the phone's external hardware lines up with that of the 9900, suggesting they're based on the same components. The handset is apparently running BlackBerry OS 7, just like a 9900 should. Similarities aside, the metallic keyboard is utterly un-RIM and looks positively alien. Then there's the replacement of the optical trackpad with this odd crosshair pattern, and the puzzling PROCEEDING stamped up top... it's all just too weird.

If you've got any theories that might explain just what it is we're looking at here, we'd love to hear them.
