Rogers Sets Galaxy S II LTE Release Date, First CA LTE Smartphone

Samsung first described its LTE update to the Galaxy S IIbeing prepared for service on Rogers in Canada. We speculated at the time about when the carrier might be able to release the phone, and wondered if it would arrive in the weeks following the move to bring LTE to Toronto planned for September 28. It turns out there will be no such delay, with Rogers revealing its intent to launch the phone nation-wide on that very same day.

Rogers broke the news via Twitter, also mentioning the phone's ability to gracefully step down to HSPA+ when operated in areas lacking an LTE signal. Considering Rogers is still rolling-out its network, that's going to be important for many users. This will mark the debut of a proper smartphone on a Canadian LTE network; let's hope it's up to the strain.

Like the Galaxy S II variants coming to US carriers starting this month, the Rogers Galaxy S II LTE will forgo the large home button of the original S II and go with four capacitive Android buttons instead. The phone will likely arrive running Android 2.3.5; no word yet from Rogers on price.
