LG To Introduce OpenGL-based 2D to 3D Game Conversion Engine

There will certainly be a lot of interesting things on display at this week's IFA in Berlin but not all of them will be hardware-related. LG is set to introduce yet another world's first, this time an OpenGL-based 2D to 3D game conversion engine for smartphones.

The LG Optimus 3D, the manufacturer's first take at a glasses-free 3D phone, will get a Maintenance Release (MR) this October and the 3D GameConverter will be part of it. The application will allow for a 3D user experience on previously purchased2D games. There's little work on the software side by the game producers and once a title has been optimized for 3D conversion, "it will be converted into 3D using default visual settings. Unlisted OpenGL-based 2D games can still be converted to 3D by adjusting the settings manually. Optimized settings for approximately 50 2D games will be available by October, with 50 more to be added by year’s end". LG has also filed several patent licenses in various countries for technologies embedded in the 2D-3D game conversion feature.
