Radio Shack Prepping for September Google Wallet Launch?

Back in May, Google revealed its idea for a mobile payment system employing NFC technology, Google Wallet. We've heard of plenty of carriers, financial institutions, and smartphone manufacturers chime in with their ideas on how to launch such a mobile payment system that would really catch on with the public. It's far too early to predict how things will go, but Google certainly has the user base and the industry influence to have a fighting chance at success. Of course, to know which system will be successful, we'll have to see how it fares with national deployment. For Google Wallet, it looks like that could be coming in early September.

A leaked email sent out to Radio Shack stores advises them that select retail locations will be getting the ability to process Google Wallet transactions using NFC as of September 1. You might not be able to purchase your next pack of batteries with your Nexus S straight away, but stores that get the appropriate POS NFC transceivers will likely start using them before the end of the month.

We're not sure how large this initial group of stores offering Google Wallet services will be, or how evenly spread across the country, but it still looks to be a big step towards widespread deployment of mobile-based payments in the US, and could signal a larger Google Wallet roll-out; now you'll just need a smartphone that supports NFC.
