iOS 5.0 Finally Dropping 3GS Support, Says Murtazin

Eldar Murtazin has made some prescient observations about smartphones, so when he publicly starts a rumor, we tend to listen. His latest puts a nail in the coffin of the iPhone 3GS, predicting that the upcoming release of iOS 5.0 won't support hardware older than the iPhone 4.

This shouldn't be really surprising to anyone, considering Apple may have already set the bar for iOS 4.0 too high; remember all the issues with the iPhone 3G trying to run the updated software? Even the 3GS struggles to run recent 4.x releases, so you could argue that the writing's been on the wall for some time now.

Those who are likely to be most upset by this news, should it turn out to be true, are those iPhone userswho are just now getting a 3GS, taking advantage of the new lower pricing for the smartphone. Granted, we see the same sort of situation in the Android world, but there's something upsetting about being able to buy a new smartphone, only to find out it won't ever be receiving an operating system update. If you bought a new 3GS today, would you expect Apple to keep supporting it, even though it first came out years ago?
