Minecraft Coming to Android as Xperia Play Exclusive

The stormy waters of Android fragmentation are being churned up yet again, with the recent ability to bypass certain checks for games designed only to run on specific hardware. This isn't long after we saw the eagerly-awaited streaming Netflix app made to run on Android smartphones outside the short list of approved models. Users just don't want artificial restrictions tying apps to hardware, and so far have been very resourceful in getting around them. The latest title to be announced as an exclusive, one that will certainly stir up interest in getting it running on a wider selection of Androids, is the PC indie gaming hit Minecraft, premiering exclusively on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Developer Mojang hasn't announced just how long Minecraft will have its only home on the Xperia Play. This situation presents new challenges for hackers looking to adapt the game for other Androids, since there's no easy substitute for the Play's unique controls. Frankly, it's difficult to imagine playing Minecraft with anything less than the kind of button and stick layout supported by the Play, but resourceful minds tend to come up with remarkable solutions, given the right motivation.

More news about Minecraft for Android, and its Play exclusivity, should surface during Mojang's press event scheduled for June 7.
