T-Mobile G2x Getting Gingerbread This Summer

Earlier today, we looked into the situation with the G2x, T-Mobile's carrier-branded version of the LG Optimus 2X, and the software update T-Mobile claims the companies are working on to offer "performance enhancements". There may be more than one G2x update in the works, since the carrier has separately posted some new information about the smartphone's Gingerbread update, now confirmed for summer.

Last time T-Mobile talked Gingerbread for the G2x, around this time last month, it tweeted that the software would arrive soon, saying "you won't have to wait long". Apparently several months isn't a long time in the carrier's book, since now we're looking at waiting at least another month before Gingerbread will arrive. There's already been a leak of an official Gingerbread build for the phone, but more work may be done on the code before it's finalized and ready for distribution.

The way T-Mobile has talked about this "performance enhancement" update, the one we're hoping is in response to the numerous reports of resets on the G2x, it does seem like it's being pursued separately from the Gingerbread update. Right now, we just can't say how they'll end up being distributed - if T-Mobile will bundle everything together into one package. That could be bad news for users experience the resets, especially if T-Mobile waits until the very end of summer to release the software; four more months with a malfunctioning phone sounds like no fun at all.
