Mango Dev Tools Are Out, Back To Calling It Windows Phone 7.5

Yesterday we found some evidence supporting the numbering of the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Mango update as WP7.5. Then today, before Microsoft's press event, new documents pointed to Mango being called Windows Phone 7.1. Now the latest edition of the Windows Phone Developer Tools is out, and it's just adding to the confusion.

Today's WPDT release bills itself as 7.1 beta, but when you actually install everything, and load up the Mango emulator, the software clearly identifies itself as Windows Phone OS 7.5. Ultimately, Mango is still bringing all the new features Microsoft's promised regardless of its version number, so this really only matter for people like us, to make it easier to refer to specific editions of the mobile operating system. One way or the other, a standard will emerge, but for now at least, Mango=7.1 doesn't seem so cut-and-dry.

Developers can run that emulator now, but the real fun will come in about a month or so when Microsoft gives them access to Mango on actual Windows Phone hardware. The details aren't worked out yet, but some solution will be revealed by Microsoft as summer nears.
